650,000 hazardous chemicals are used in American workplaces.

MANY SCIENTIFIC STUDIES SHOW THAT CHILDREN WITH BIRTH DEFECTS ARE LIKELY TO HAVE A PARENT WHO WORKED CLOSELY WITH DANGEROUS CHEMICALS AND TOXINS ON THE JOB, ESPECIALLY DURING PREGNANCY. These types of chemicals that cause birth defects are teratogen and/or genotoxins. A teratogen is an agent that interferes with the development of an embryo or fetus and causes birth defects. A genotoxin is an agent that damages cellular DNA resulting in mutations. Chemicals can be both a teratogen and a genotoxin.

The most common toxins linking these jobs and parents who gave birth to children with birth defects include industrial solvents, pesticides, gasses and heavy metals.

Such chemicals are often used in cleanroom environments to make semiconductor parts and include etching materials, solvents, cleaning fluids, photoresists, developers, and ethylene glycol ethers (EGEs). Pesticides and harmful herbicides used in farming contain many toxic chemicals that can cause birth defects in children whose parents were exposed through commercial agricultural work, groundwater contamination, or airborne drift. Heavy metals used in fracking, oil and gas, and other energy production sites are also linked to birth defects.

These toxins, along with other toxic substances, can cause reproductive harm to both men and women, often causing severe birth defects while the child is in the mother’s womb, or even causing the parent to pass damaged and defective DNA onto their children.
